I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on what the best energy drinks/gels to consume when doing the long runs for marathon training?

I find the sis go gels are the best, easy to carry and you do not need to take them with water as you do with most other gels on the market. They cost 99p at health@herbs.Just take one or two in the second half of you run.

good question Rhodri, it makes sense to use the same stuff that will be used in your chosen event, at least that way your body will be used to it.

For the shorter long run eg 18miles there is an arguement for not taking anything at all as it may train your body to cope better with dehydration. In the summaer I do a long run of 15miles on a unday without any additional fluids or breakfast!
Using the same product available at the Marathon is sensible just don’t hydrate excessively-you neeed less than you might think-probably only 200-400mls/hour.Having said all this my total experience of Marathon running is one and I didn’t enjoy it……..

I have always used lucozade sport orange flavour as this is what they give you on London Marathon and on Edingburgh marathon, i also keep a handful of jelly babies in my pocket they are a lovely treat at around mile 16 of a 20 mile run
